Connectivity

eSIM Not Working Abroad? Setup and Troubleshooting

Quick answer: Most "eSIM not working" problems come down to three things: data roaming is switched off, the eSIM isn't set as your active data line, or the APN didn't load correctly. Fix those three first, in that order, and you'll clear most cases in under five minutes. If none of them work, the profile may need reinstalling, or the device is carrier-locked.

You land, turn off airplane mode, and: nothing. No bars, no data, or a signal that never becomes an actual connection. It's one of the most common first-hour travel problems. It's also rarely the eSIM's fault. Almost every case traces back to a device setting, one you can fix yourself without calling support.

The 3 fixes that solve most eSIM problems

Try these in order. They cover most "not working" reports across every provider, not one specific brand.

  1. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. The single most common cause. An eSIM is a roaming profile abroad by design, so if roaming is off for that line, you get signal but zero data.
  2. Set the eSIM as your active data line. Installing a profile doesn't make it the line your phone uses for data. If your home SIM is still selected, the travel eSIM sits there doing nothing.
  3. Restart the phone properly. Not just airplane mode, a full power-off, thirty-second wait, power-on. This forces re-registration on the local network and a fresh APN fetch.

As of 2026, these are the first three things most eSIM support teams ask you to check, per Airalo's Help Center and Simology's troubleshooting guide.

Symptom: eSIM installed but no data

Signal bars, maybe, but nothing loads. Almost always: data roaming off, or the wrong line selected for data.

  • iPhone: Settings → Cellular → tap the eSIM line → Data Roaming on, then confirm Cellular Data is set to the eSIM too.
  • Android: Settings → Network & Internet (or Connections) → SIMs → Roaming on for the eSIM, then set it as Preferred SIM for mobile data.

Still no data with both correct? The culprit is usually a wrong or missing APN (Access Point Name, the setting telling your phone which gateway to use for data). On Android, add or edit it under Mobile Networks → Access Point Names using the values from your provider's confirmation email. On iPhone, APNs are usually locked, so request a carrier settings update instead, per Simology's APN guide.

Symptom: "No service" or searching forever

Usually the phone hasn't registered on a local partner network, or automatic selection picked a network your plan doesn't cover.

  • Turn off automatic network selection and manually pick an operator until one connects, then switch automatic back on.
  • Confirm your device isn't carrier-locked. It's one of the most overlooked causes of a foreign eSIM never activating, per Simology's fix list.
  • Check you're actually inside the plan's coverage area. Regional plans sometimes exclude countries you'd expect.

Symptom: eSIM stuck on "activating"

Arrival-triggered plans can't finish activation until you land and connect to a local tower, so a stuck "activating" state after install can be normal; backend provisioning can take 15-30 minutes, per Saily's activation guide. Also check the device clock and time zone are on automatic (a mismatch can block activation), and turn off any VPN during first-time activation. Don't reinstall just because it's slow. Most QR codes are single-use.

Symptom: data worked, then stopped

Check the basics first:

  • Data allowance used up. Most plans stop dead at the cap with no warning. Check the balance in your provider's app.
  • Plan validity expired. Fixed-day plans stop the moment the window closes, even with unused data left.
  • Stale DNS after a Wi-Fi switch. Custom hotel Wi-Fi DNS can block browsing on mobile data after you switch. iPhone: Settings → Wi-Fi → tap the network → Configure DNS → Automatic.

iPhone-specific fixes

Order that resolves most iPhone issues: Settings → Cellular, confirm the line shows "eSIM" (not "No SIM"); tap it, turn Data Roaming on; set Cellular Data to that line; accept any "Carrier Settings Update" pop-up; full restart. Still stuck? Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset Network Settings clears stale configs. It also forgets saved Wi-Fi passwords, so I'd treat it as a later step, not a first move.

Android-specific fixes

Menu wording varies by brand (Samsung's "Connections" vs. stock Android's "Network & Internet"), same logic: Settings → SIM Manager, confirm the eSIM is enabled; set it as Preferred SIM for mobile data; toggle roaming on; check or add the APN under Mobile Networks → Access Point Names; restart. Also worth a check: some phones default to 5G-only on a band the local partner network doesn't support there. Switching to "4G/5G Auto" instead of "5G Only" fixes a surprising number of dead connections.

When to reinstall the eSIM profile

Last resort, not a first move, since most eSIM QR codes are single-use and your provider may need to reissue one. Try it only after confirming roaming is on, the eSIM is the active data line, you've done a full restart, you're inside the plan's coverage window with data and validity remaining, and the device isn't carrier-locked. Still nothing? Contact your provider's support before deleting anything. Most eSIM apps, including Airalo's, have in-app chat and can push a fresh QR code or confirm plan status without losing the purchase.

Quick checklist

  • Data roaming: on, for the eSIM line specifically
  • Active data line: set to the eSIM, not your home SIM
  • Full restart: power off, wait 30 seconds, power on
  • APN: correct and present (Android manual, or iOS carrier update)
  • Network selection: manual scan if automatic never registers
  • Data balance / plan validity: not expired or exhausted
  • Carrier lock and VPN: device unlocked, VPN off during activation
  • Reinstall or contact support: only after everything above

FAQ

Why does my eSIM show as installed but still have no data?

Almost always data roaming being off, or your phone still using another line for data. Turn on roaming for the eSIM, set it as the active data line, then restart the phone.

Why does my eSIM say "No service"?

Usually the phone hasn't registered on a local partner network yet. Turn off automatic network selection, manually pick an operator, and confirm your device isn't carrier-locked.

My eSIM has been "activating" for a while. Is that normal?

Yes, for some plans. Arrival-triggered eSIMs can't finish activation until connected to a local tower, and backend provisioning can take 15-30 minutes. Give it time in-country before reinstalling.

Can I just delete and reinstall my eSIM if it's not working?

Only as a last resort. Most QR codes are single-use, so deleting before confirming the basics (roaming, data line, restart) can force you to request a new one.

Do I need to set the APN manually for an eSIM?

Sometimes on Android, rarely on iPhone. If you have signal but no data after checking roaming and the data line, add the APN manually on Android, or request a carrier settings update on iPhone.

Why is my physical SIM interfering with my eSIM?

Dual SIM phones only send data through one line at a time. If your home SIM is still set as the data line, the eSIM gets no traffic even though it's active. Switch the data selection to the eSIM explicitly.

Get back online, then get a plan that's less fiddly

Most "eSIM not working" reports come down to data roaming, the wrong active data line, or needing a plain restart. Work through those three first, then the symptom-specific fixes above if it persists. Setting up a new eSIM for an upcoming trip?
