ASUS ZenScreen Portable Monitor

A slim USB-C monitor that turns into a second screen wherever you set your laptop down.

The ZenScreen is ASUS's line of portable USB-C monitors: a 1080p panel about the thickness of a phone case that runs off a single cable from your laptop. For nomads who want a real second screen without carrying a full monitor, it is one of the better-known options for that job.

What it is

The ASUS ZenScreen is a portable monitor line, most commonly the 15.6-inch MB16AC: a 1920x1080 IPS panel, about 8mm thick and 0.78kg, that connects and powers over a single USB-C cable. No separate power brick, no HDMI-plus-USB tangle. Plug it into a laptop's USB-C port and it works as a second display.

The nomad angle

This solves a specific problem: working from a laptop alone means one window at a time, constant alt-tabbing between a doc and a spreadsheet, code and docs, a call and notes. A second screen fixes that, but a real monitor doesn't fit in a backpack. The ZenScreen does. It folds into its own case (which doubles as a stand), slides into a laptop sleeve, and comes out for a few hours in a coworking space or hotel desk before going back in the bag. For a lot of remote workers it changes how they set up in a cafe: laptop flat, monitor propped beside it, actual dual-screen work instead of squinting at one 13-inch panel.

Honest caveat

Brightness is the tradeoff. Portable monitors this thin and light are not built to compete with a desktop display in direct sun or a bright window seat; expect it to wash out outdoors or near a sunny window, and to look best indoors or in shade. It also needs a laptop with USB-C video output (DisplayPort Alt Mode) to run off one cable; on ports that don't support that, you'll need the bundled USB-A adapter and a separate power source, which erodes the one-cable simplicity. If your laptop only has USB-A, or you mainly work outside, this is the wrong monitor for you.

Price reality

ZenScreen models run in the low-to-mid hundreds of dollars depending on size and features (some phone-battery or 4K variants cost more). It is not an impulse buy, but it is cheaper and lighter than any competing solution that gives you a real second screen on the road.

  • Single USB-C cable for both power and video (on supported laptops)
  • 8mm thin, under 800g, folds into its own stand-case
  • TUV Rheinland flicker-free certification and a blue-light filter

What works

  • Genuinely portable: thin, light, and folds into a case that doubles as a stand
  • One-cable setup on laptops with USB-C video out, no separate power brick
  • Turns any desk into a real dual-screen workstation, a meaningful productivity jump over a single laptop screen
  • Flicker-free, blue-light-filtered panel for long work sessions

What to watch

  • Brightness is modest, washes out in direct sun or a bright window seat
  • Needs a laptop with USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode for the true single-cable setup; otherwise you're back to an adapter and a separate power source
  • Adds real weight and bulk to a minimalist carry, even if it's light for a monitor

Questions at the counter

Does it work with any laptop?

It works best with laptops whose USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode (video plus power over one cable). Older or USB-A-only laptops need the included adapter and a separate power source, which is bulkier.

Can I use it with a phone or tablet?

Some ZenScreen variants support phones and tablets with USB-C video out, but check the specific model. The mainstream MB16AC is built and marketed around laptop use.

Is it bright enough to use outside?

Not reliably. Like most portable monitors, brightness is tuned for indoor use to keep the panel thin and light. Expect it to struggle in direct sunlight.

How much does it weigh in a bag?

The 15.6-inch MB16AC is about 0.78kg (1.7lb), plus its folio case. It is light for a monitor but still a noticeable addition to a minimalist carry.
